Epilepsy Syndromes

"An epilepsy syndrome refers to a cluster of features incorporating seizure types, EEG, and imaging features that tend to occur together. It often has age-dependent features such as age at onset and remission (where applicable), seizure triggers, diurnal variation, and sometimes prognosis."1

According to the NICE Guideline: Epilepsies in children, young people and adults:

  • The seizure type(s) and epilepsy syndrome, aetiology, and co-morbidity should be determined.
  • If there is diagnostic uncertainty, individuals should be referred to tertiary services soon (within 4 weeks) for further assessment.
